Henry James and Mark Twain
We'll be discussing "A True Story" and "Daisy Miller" in class today. We'll probably also have a quiz, and here, in advance, is the bonus question: What nineteenth-century writer--editor of The Atlantic Monthly and author of "Editha," among other works--was a good friend of both Twain and James?

Class today and Thursday
Dear English 481 students,
As I mentioned in class, for Thursday we’ll be continuing to discuss the Dickinson poems. We’ll also talk about the poems from the _Household book of Poetry_ and the criticism on Emily Dickinson. Here's the link for the poems that were on the overhead today:
http://www.wsu.edu/~campbelld/amlit/dickinsonsafe.htm
If you weren’t in class today (we are meeting in Thompson 105 every class day from now on), you can find the readings at this link:
http://www.wsu.edu/~campbelld/engl481/readings.htm
You can also go to our course page and click on “Readings.”
Here’s the “frilly” Emily Dickinson picture I mentioned in class: http://www.wsu.edu/~campbelld/pics/emilyfrilly.jpg
Here’s the Wordsworth poem I quoted in class today. It’s one of the “Lucy” poems.
W. Wordsworth
CLXXX. "A slumber did my spirit seal"
A SLUMBER did my spirit seal;
I had no human fears:
She seem'd a thing that could not feel
The touch of earthly years.
No motion has she now, no force; 5
She neither hears nor sees;
Roll'd round in earth's diurnal course
With rocks, and stones, and trees.
I’m going to send this message via RONET (WSU system) just to make sure that everyone gets it, so you may receive it twice.
See you on Thursday.
Dr. Campbell
